M.S. Doss Learning Center
The M.S. Doss Learning Center at the Ranch was constructed in 1985 through the contribution of Mr. and Mrs. Doss of Seminole, Texas. The Learning Center houses a library, computer lab, music room, reading room and a two study rooms.
A routine part of everyday life at the Ranch during the school year is for every boy to arrive at the Learning Center after school to work on the day's homework assignments, reports and prepare for upcoming tests.
The Learning Center is directed by Darcell Stewart, who supervises students from Angelo State University who tutor the boys in subjects in which they need additional help. The benefits of the Learning Center and tutors are being realized in the lives of the boys who are on the honor roll, and in the lives of alumni who are attending college (read about them in our News & Events and Success Stories sections).
Texas Leadership Charter Academy
A Partnership between Home and School
The goals of the West Texas Boys Ranch include "developing the academic and social skills to enable each boy to become the best he can be."
The Ranch's partner in the education of its boys is the Texas Leadership Charter Academy (TLCA).
The small school environment that TLCA offers allows boys to have more one on one instruction and see true success by being able to be active in many areas of the community. West Texas Boys Ranch boys are found in every aspect of the school such as football, basketball, track, powerlifting, tennis, band, FFA, 4-H, One Act Play, debate, and the list goes on and on. Our boys are very welcome in the community. “Our boys find a level of success and self-discovery that we feel they might not have in a larger school atmosphere” stated Wade Kirkwood WTBR Program Director.
The Ranch runs its own bus service each morning and afternoon, and there are also vans used daily for transportation for boys involved in extra-curricular activities, including sports, band, FFA, UIL academic events and other school activities.

Angelo State University
Established in 1928, Angelo State University is helping alumni of West Texas Boys Ranch earn college degrees. As part of the Texas Tech University System, ASU provides opportunity for learning to our young men that is top-notch. Located in San Angelo, ASU's close proximity to the Ranch enables our alumni the ability to stay in contact with the Ranch's houseparents and staff - a vitally important part of the developing lives of our young men.
The graduate degree programs offered at ASU are also assisting Ranch staff in obtaining advanced degrees, further enhancing their expertise in childcare and administration.
The MS Doss Learning Center at West Texas Boys Ranch utilizes students from ASU as tutors for our boys. Each ASU student-tutor is an upper-classman who has been carefully selected and supervised by Debbie Frantum, WTBR Learning Center Director.
West Texas Boys Ranch is pleased to have such an important ally in educating our boys. Click link to learn more about Angelo State University.
